Statewide Voting Rights & Democracy Organizations

  • Democracy North Carolina — One of the best-known nonpartisan voting rights groups in NC. Focuses on voter access, election protection, policy advocacy, and building civic power in Black, brown, low-wealth, student, and marginalized communities. (Democracy NC)

  • You Can Vote — Nonpartisan nonprofit focused on voter registration, education, and helping people overcome barriers to voting. Works extensively with youth, formerly incarcerated people, low-income voters, and communities affected by voter suppression. (You Can Vote)

  • North Carolina Voter Protection Alliance — Focused specifically on protecting voting rights, election transparency, voter protection infrastructure, and combating voter intimidation/disenfranchisement. (NCVPA)

 

Organizations Focused on Marginalized & Frontline Communities

  • Action NC — Grassroots organizing group working on racial justice, immigrant justice, economic justice, and increased voter participation through community leadership development. (Action NC)

  • North Carolina Empowerment Organization — Works on civic engagement and political education in disenfranchised and marginalized communities, including voter registration and research on legislative disenfranchisement. (NCEO)

  • Power the Vote NC — Initiative of the NC League of Conservation Voters Foundation. Focuses on year-round civic engagement in frontline Eastern NC communities, especially BIPOC and environmentally impacted communities. (NC Conservation Voters)

 

Youth & Community Civic Engagement

  • Kinston Teens — Youth-led nonprofit combining civic engagement with direct community support and voter outreach for young people. 

  • Common Cause NC — National democracy reform organization with a strong NC chapter focused on voting access, civic participation, youth engagement, and fair elections.

 

Groups Working with Returning Citizens / Formerly Incarcerated Voters

  • Forward Justice — Civil rights organization heavily involved in restoring voting rights and legal advocacy for formerly incarcerated people and Black communities in NC.

  • Emancipate NC — Works on criminal justice reform, civic empowerment, and support for formerly incarcerated individuals, including civic participation initiatives

 

Dates & Deadlines

Below are important voter dates and deadlines for the 2026 general election in North Carolina:

  • September 4: Absentee ballots must be available and distributed to military and overseas voters. For more, see Vote by Mail.

  • October 9: Voter registration deadline (5 p.m.).* For more, see How to Register.

  • October 15: In-person early voting begins; same-day registration available. For more, see Vote Early in Person.

  • October 20: Absentee ballot request deadline (5 p.m.).*

  • October 31: In-person early voting ends (3 p.m.).

  • November 3: Election Day. For more, see Vote in Person on Election Day.

  • November 3: Absentee ballot return deadline (7:30 p.m.).*
